Should You Repair or Replace Your Air Conditioner in Montgomery, TX?

Should You Repair or Replace Your AC Unit?

With our extreme humidity and triple-digit summer days, your HVAC system works harder than almost anywhere else in the country.

At Weiss Air Conditioning & Plumbing, we get asked the same question every season: “Is it worth fixing one more time, or is it time for a new one?” While we can’t give you an exact answer without looking at yours, we’ve broken down the math and the local factors that matter most.

The North Houston Lifespan: 10 to 15 Years

While some national websites claim an AC can last 20 years, the reality in North Houston is different. Due to our high run-times and coastal humidity, most local AC units last between 10 and 15 years. If your unit is approaching the 12-year mark, it could be nearing its “retirement window.” However, age isn’t the only factor we look at.

When a Professional Repair is the Best Path

We believe in honest service, and often, a replacement is not the answer. A professional repair is usually the most cost-effective path if:

  • The system is well-maintained: If you’ve had annual maintenance, your components are likely in good shape.

  • The fix is minor: Blown capacitors, failed fan motors, or clogged drain lines are routine fixes that can get a healthy system back to 100% quickly.

  • It’s a “First-Time” Breakdown: If your unit has been reliable until now, one repair shouldn’t trigger a full replacement.

3 Signs Your System is Struggling (And Some Options)

If you’ve had multiple breakdowns this season, your system is sending you a message. However, the solution isn’t always a brand-new AC. Here is how we diagnose the three biggest “Red Flags”:

A. Frequent Repairs: The “Twice-a-Year” Rule

If you’ve called a technician more than twice in the last 12 months for different issues, your system is likely reaching its breaking point. While we can keep patching it, the cumulative cost of service calls often outweighs the monthly investment in a new, warrantied unit.

B. The R-22 Dilemma: Cost vs. Longevity

If your older unit uses R-22 (Freon), a refrigerant leak is a major decision point. Because R-22 is no longer produced, reclaimed gas is expensive.

  • The Repair Option: We can absolutely leak-search and recharge your system to keep you cool.

  • The Replacement Consideration: Because R-22 is no longer produced, the cost of the refrigerant alone can make a major repair feel like a down payment on a new, more efficient system.

C. The Humidity Struggle: AC vs. Dehumidifier

If your home feels “sticky” or damp even when the air is blowing cold, your system is failing to manage latent heat (moisture).

  • The Replacement Path: If your AC is over 12 years old, its coils may be too degraded to effectively dehumidify. A modern variable-speed AC is designed specifically to run longer at lower speeds to pull more moisture out of the air.

  • The “Whole-Home” Alternative: If your AC is still mechanically sound (e.g., 7–9 years old) but North Houston’s 80% humidity is winning, you might not need a new AC unit. We can often install a Whole-Home Dehumidifier into your existing ductwork. This removes the “clamminess” without forcing your AC to overwork, often extending the life of your current unit.
